Explain why there is such a huge difference between the family members regarding identity

In my opionion,there is such a huge difference between the family members regarding identity,because Manny was born in England. On page 22 in line 20-26,Manny said that he feels home in England,because he was born there and that England is his homecountry. Also he says,that he wouldn't habe a clue what to do or where to go,if he were in Punjabi.
So I think he doesn't feel belonging to Punjabi. In contrast to Manny,his parents were born in Punjabi and they lived there for many years. They were educated in a more traditional way. Manny's identity is influenced by the British way of life. He never lerarned to live a life like a Punjabi teenager.

Dialouge between Manny and his dad.

Father : "Look! Your brothers are happy,why can't you be like them ? Do you think you will be
happier when you marry a white girl ?"
Manny :"Perhaps not happier,but when i get married then because i love the girl. ( What did I
say , man?! My father will kill me !)
Father : "What did you say ?! Do you want to hurt your Mothers feelings ?! It will be your fault
when she kills herself !!!"
Manny : (I him for doing so,Why can't he be a bit like Ekbal's father? Why he can't tries to
understand me ?! ) "No Daddy-ji.I love my mother."
Father : "What about your Punjabi traditions ? Why don't you want to be a Punjabi man ?"
Manny : ( Because i was born in England,Because i live in England,Because i hate
you,Because i hate the tradition-stuff,because i hate your racist behaviour,because i
hate Punjabi!! YOU'RE BASTARD! )
I prefer to be free .. and i hope that you will accept that one day ..

To what extend can members of Manny's family be described as typical 1st or 2nd generation immigrants?

In my opinion,Manny's parents can be described as typical 1st generation immigrants.because they were born in Punjabi and they're only living in Britain to earn money.
Manny can be descrbed as a typical 2nd generation immigrant,because he was born in Enland and he feels belonging to England. It is his home country.
manny parents want to go back to Punjabi and they keep the Punjabi traditions,allthough they're living in England. Manny's brothers are typical 1st generation immigrants,because they're living only in England to earn money,too and they're keeping the traditions as well. They don't want to be British and they also want to be like their father.

2) Explain the chances which Manzoor sees for the 3rd generation immigrants :

* The 3rd generation immigrant are most successful in integrating and they become
absorbed into the British culutre. They haven't got any connection to their home
countries. Also they have better chances on the job / working market because they
are more confident and fully accepted

Manny tries to fight against the rules of his dad. Manny's father said him,that Manny has to marry in the age of 17 and Manny doesn't want that. He thinks about a plan to coming out of the plans of his dad. He wants to make himself as unsuitable as possible,because he thinks that no father-in-law would want a thief and a smoker for his son-in-law.
Manny tries everything to resits against the traditions of his dad. He doesn't want to marry a unknown girl,so he steals a CD and smokes cigarettes.

Analyse how your characters attitude towards identitiy is presented in the novel :

Manny has a very strong personal and also a strong cultural identity.
He is very self-confident and very brave,because he often opposes himself to his family,especially to his father. Manny's father is very strict and he wants his children to keep the Punjabi traditions by marrying in the age of 17 to a girl which he doesn't know.So he resists against the rules of his dad. He is often beaten up by his father and by his brothers,neverless Manny is brave enough to resist. He exactly knows what he wants and that is studying and marrying a girl,that he really loves.
He is very intelligent and he identify himself more with the English culture ad with the Punjabi. So he also has a strong cultural identity.
He and his family are Punjabi's,but Manny feels more British as Punjabi. His family tries to keep the traditions, but Manny don't want to keep them. In his opinion,his family has to adapt the British way of life,because they're living there.

1) I think type c) can be found in the novel,beauce it is a First-person-narrator.
Manny tells the story about his life and about his feelings.So he brings us close to the
information,feelings and opinions.
2) The name of my chosen character is Manjit,but he wants the others to call him Manny.
He is a 13-years-old boy and he lives in Leicester.His parents come from Punjab,but Manny
was born in England.His parents tries to keep the Punjabi traditions,because they want their
children to get married ine the age of 17 to a girl or boy they don't know. Manny has got two
older brothers amd two older sisters. Also Manny loves the British lifestyle and he doesn't
accept the view of life of his family. Manny is very good in school and he gets high grades.
He also wants to study,when he is finish with school. His best friend is Adrian,called Ady.
Ady is a "Black-Jamaican" and Manny spends most of his freetime with him. Manny also get a
girlfriend,named Lisa. Many likes football,especially Manchester United. He and Ady are often
stealing in shops and Manny likes to smoke cigarettes,but his family doesn't know about this.
He is treated as a black sheep in his family,because he is the only one in his family,who thinks
education is important and the only one who won't accept the rules of his dad.

"Ady were a prelude to my future.Like a one-minute trailer to a film - a taste of what was to come ".

I think that this sentence is a foreshawdowing of the whole story. Ady shows Manny the way of life,that Manny wants to live. Ady is free and he hasn't got the problems in his family like Manny has. Manny wishes that he could live a life like Ady.Manny knows , that he will have a life like Ady has.
